Polyaspartic and Polyurea Coatings in Bismarck, ND

Bismarck spends about 3.4 months a year below the temperature standard epoxy needs to cure. Polyaspartic is the chemistry that does not care, and it is the reason a Bismarck garage floor can be done in February at all.

Polyaspartic is aliphatic polyurea. It is produced by reacting an aliphatic polyisocyanate with a polyaspartic ester, which is a chemically slowed-down polyurea that gives an installer a usable working window instead of the seconds a straight spray polyurea allows. In practice that yields a floor coating which cures at low temperatures, returns to service in hours, and does not amber under UV.

The Cure Problem, in Numbers

Epoxy cure is temperature-driven in a way most homeowners underestimate. It is also the slab temperature that governs, not the air temperature. The industry practice is to take the reading with an infrared surface thermometer on the concrete, because a 4 inch slab sitting on ground that is frozen four feet deep runs colder than the air above it, sometimes considerably.

The practical Bismarck answer for a heated attached garage in summer is a hybrid: epoxy base and body coat for the build and the flake bed, polyaspartic clear on top for UV stability and fast return to service. For an unheated detached shop, or for any job between late November and early March, we quote polyaspartic through the whole build.

How a Winter Polyaspartic Install Actually Runs in Bismarck

Materials are conditioned

Resin and hardener are stored warm, in the 70 to 90 F range, and brought in at temperature. Cold material behaves differently in the pail and on the floor.

The space gets tempered and dried

Indirect heat plus air movement, held steady rather than blasted. The aim is a stable slab and a controlled dew point, not a hot room and a cold floor.

Sections are planned before mixing

Cure is monitored, not left

How fast can I use the floor after a polyaspartic install?

Usually foot traffic the same evening and vehicles within 24 to 48 hours, against roughly a day for foot traffic and five to seven days for vehicles on a standard epoxy build. In a single-bay Bismarck garage that is also the only storage and the only place to park through a snow event, that difference is often the whole reason people choose it.

Is polyaspartic worth the extra cost over epoxy?

It depends on the building. In a heated attached garage where you can schedule the job in May, an epoxy base with a polyaspartic topcoat gets you most of the benefit for less money, roughly $6 to $12 per square foot against $10 to $16 for a full polyaspartic build. In an unheated detached shop, or if you need the work done between late November and early March, polyaspartic is not an upgrade, it is the only chemistry that will cure properly.

Does polyaspartic yellow like epoxy does?

No. Ambering in epoxy comes from the aromatic components in the resin reacting to UV. Polyaspartic is aliphatic, which is the same reason aliphatic urethanes are used as automotive and exterior topcoats. In a Bismarck garage with a west-facing overhead door and glass panels, the strip of floor that gets afternoon sun in summer is exactly where an epoxy topcoat shows its age first.

What is the catch with polyaspartic?

Working time. Polyaspartic can kick in as little as 20 to 30 minutes depending on the formulation and the conditions, so the crew has to be organised and the sections have to be planned before anything is mixed. It is a less forgiving product for an inexperienced installer, and it costs more per gallon. Those are real trade-offs, not marketing points against it.

Can polyaspartic go over an existing epoxy floor?

Often yes, if the existing film is sound and fully bonded. The old surface is mechanically abraded to give the new coat something to key into, and any delaminated areas are ground out and rebuilt first. If more than a small percentage of the existing floor is lifting, a recoat is a bad investment and full removal is the honest recommendation.
